I think additional oil subsidies (roads, war, airlines being the most expensive I can think of at the moment) are about the worst possible reaction to this mess. Do we really need to have taxpayers on the hook for supporting the SUV/30-miles-from-work mentality that has grown up these past two decades?

generally, speaking we are richer because of our participation in world markets -- including oil.

Bush and his neocon buddies would like to run the world, I know -- but we stand to benefit a lot more by not pissing off everyone we don't agree with and INSTEAD -- agressively, unilaterally pursuing free trade at every oppty we get, IMO -- including fossil fuels or whatever we can buy cheaper on the world markets than produce ourselves.

I don't hate the Saudia Arabians for making a dollar off of me. I like affordable gasoline.
