I would describe their fundamental weakness as being derived from the same source in which they obtain their fundamental strength...conservatism. They seem strong in conserving pragmatic tradition and institution as well as principles of living that have passed the tests of time... so far. That becomes a weakness when they view the modernization of the globe (modernized to current western societal norms) as the closest thing to ideal. It is a weakness when it closes the door to dynamic innovation and chaotic events that could drive creative improvements in cultural and societal evolution. Old customs and practices might be of use in the future but conservatives are as likely to overlook them as they are to overlooking completely new innovations.

Because they are a quasi theological group, one of their weaknesses is in thinking they have a lock on divine guidence.

Although each of us is a divine creation. None of us are more divinely correct in our thinking and decision making that any others. All of us are found to be fallable to some extent. So, when one rises in status to be a ruler, that one must take council from the many in order to effectively lead.

Fundamental mistakes? Don't know.
