Depends on what State you live in. That's not true in mine.

Also, I'm a Libertarian, so I'd rather have *usage fees* like the gas tax, to pay for the infrastructure the gasoline users require (roads, maintenence, etc.), instead of having the funds come out of the hides of the general taxpayer. (Why should roads be paid for out of the income or sales tax, for example, when user fees are more appropriate?)

Also, the internal combustion engine (as with certain other technologies) creates pollution, which creates medical expenses and deaths in the general population. As a Libertarian, I believe that anyone (and that includes individuals as well as companies) that does harm on the public commons has an obligation to those that are harmed... and money is usually the remediating factor in our society.
