The NRA is a potentially dangerous radical group bent on arming themselves with military weapons just in case they want to take over the government. Many of them are extreme rightwing militia or white supremicist types. Deep-down, that is their real cause. It has nothing to do with hunting or common sense gun ownership. They just hide behind the 2nd amendment. Kerry owns weapons for self-defense and hunting. He supports those rights. Those are the only two valid reasons for owning a weapon. Also remember, rightwing terrorists can do just as much damage as Arabs. See OK City.
