Empires generally survive about 100 to 200 years. If you look back at Egyptian dynasties or Chinese dynasties you'll see that there is a pattern. Governments nearly always get out of control after that period of time. They end up contemptuous of the people. The Chinese bureaucrats grew their fingernails extra long as an indication of the contempt they had towards working people. I'm also wondering if it's a lost cause. Bush certainly makes it look like it. Clinton wasn't much better.
