Kerry got a scratch on his arm to get his 3rd Purple Heart and his ticket out of Vietnam. Policy back then was 3 Purple Hearts and a trip home. His CO said he had seen fingernail scrapes more severe than Kerry's wound for which he spent no time in a hospital.
