The VP really doesn't usually set a lot policy. But, obviously, a fusion or hybrid ticket would be rather interesting. I think you'd probably see some maverick policies come out of it. McCain has been a maverick in the Senate, trying to pass legislation that his fellow Republicans don't want to see passed. It would certainly be a media sensation, that's for sure.

One thing you have to understand about American politics is that it is extremely narrow in scope. I mean, they won't touch things like universal health care, or a living wage, or a 35 hour work week, or marijuana decriminalization, or Koyoto for that matter. Issues that have already been debated and made law in many western idustrialized democracies. Those subjects are taboo in America, at least as long as the conservatives have a grip on Washington. The only time progressive legislation has passed in the U.S. is when the Democrats were in control of Congress, and usually under a Democratic President.

I'll tell you what might happen this election cycle. Kerry might get enough momentum going that the Dems retake Congress on his coattails. It seems that the public is ready to vote the Repubs out of Congress. They're tired of the lies and hypocracy over the war and decifits. The polls I've seen indicate that the Dems might retake Congress. An indication is the fact that they won a few special elections in conservative states. This fall should be one of the more interesting elections in a long time.
