I have a Toshiba laptop running XPHome that *was* doing this on a regular basis.

Since I added 512M Ram (it was 256, now its 768M) it's stopped. Don't know if that was the reason...

MAybe make your virtual memory page smaller...

How much RAM is installed?

Those other files in the etc folder are normal. Go to event viewer (start button/run/type in eventvwr and hit the ok button. Go to system and double click on the events logged in red x's. You can copy the error message by clicking the icon that looks like two pages of paper. Paste them into a message here and we'll see if we can find some answers.
