Stereotyping Christians has become so commonplace in Hollywood it's almost invisible.

I didn't question that, although I don't think it's "Christians" that are being stereotyped. Most characters on TV are Christians or presumed to be Christians. We rarely know because the characters don't project their Christianity.

My point was, instead, about the behavior of the author. Either he wrote that as a straight piece because he really believes those stereotypes of Hollywood or because he thinks it's OK for him to broadcast stereotypes but not for Hollywood to do it. Hollywood "glorifies" abortion? C'mon.

Try this thought experiment: take any caricatured Christian character, such as Ned Flanders in The Simpsons, and make him a Jew or Muslim.

I've never seen Ned Flanders so I can't speak to that, but I have seen enough TV to recognize that it is one big Jewish joke. TV might never have developed as an entertainment medium were it not for Jewish stereotypes. Perhaps you missed it because it's "almost invisible"?

As for Muslims, I don't think we know enought about Muslims to stereotype them. Do Muslims have pushy mothers who make their kids feel guilty? Are they klutzy athletes? I couldn't come up with a stereotype of Muslims. Could you?

Everybody on the Simpsons is a stereotype. It's a cartoon show. Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is a stereotype Hindu.

take any caricatured Christian character, such as Ned Flanders in The Simpsons, and make him a Jew or Muslim. The protestations would be incessant.

Sitting here this morning, procrastinating my to-do list and still embarrassed by my lack of cultural literacy, I've spent some time researching Ned Flanders. I found a piece called The Ned Flanders Syndrome written by someone who is distressed by the ungodliness of our society. I mention the framework of the piece so that you would not automatically discount the author's characterization. This is how he described the stereotyping of Ned Flanders.

<< Of course, like all the characters in the Simpsons, Ned Flanders is a
caricature - an exaggerated stereotype. But the "born-again" model that
he represents to the world is sadly a genuine reflection of what Bible-
based Christianity has come to mean to many people today.

Ned Flanders is the apologetic, eager-to-please, church-going, glasses-
wearing, overly-"nice", conventional and dull neighbor... >>

LOL. Oh, the horrors of being stereotyped as "overly-nice"! Yep, the Jews and the Muslims would really raise a stink about that.
