First of all I'd recommend going to Amazon.com and under software type in voice recognition...then pick IBm ViaVoice Standard v.10 and Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 Preferred. Then read what users say about the product. Some good info about system requirements and how user friendly they are or aren't.

I've heard that the more powerful the computer the better they work...so a reasonably decent pc will probably be a plus.

A good site to check out for computer deals from the major pc makers is techbargains.com...check the Top System Deals on the upper left side. The deals change almost daily.

Here's a site that discusses voice recognition software. I used Dragon Naturally speaking a few years ago but I understand it is much better now. It was cool but was a pain in the you-know-what to train it to recognize your speech. That could have been my southern drawl though. Yall know what I mean?

Believe it or not you can buy a program called Front Page 2002 (a web site building program). It has speach recognition and will type what you talk.

Beware, this program is not all its cracked up to be. I have a rich southern accent so maybe its me but this darn program don't type what I say.

I knew a doctor that got voice recognition software for his computer system. This was probably three years ago, so I'm sure it's come a long way since then. He was really pleased with it except for a few bugs. You have to read text so it learns your voice patterns, and it seems to handle it well. He said the only problem they had wasn't the big medical words, because they were different and a distinctive sound, but words like or, are, that sounded similar gave the program a little trouble, if you didn't pronounce then properly. He claimed it saved big bucks every month not having to have the dictation transcribed.
