The last time I flew, I sat down at the gate noticing that in the middle of the first row of seats was a small suitcase all by its lonesome. But I didn't think anything about it. About ten minutes later one of the agents at the desk noticed the package and walked over to ask those nearby whether they knew the owner. I told her that it had been unattended for at least ten minutes. She called security.

As it turns out, the owner was a woman seated about thirty feet away at a table munching on some breakfast. The woman was startled by the concern. She kept insisting that she could see the package from where she was seated. Obviously, her focus was on the safety of her belongings and was unable to shift gears into security's concern about what danger the package could be to the rest of us. Finally the security guys escorted her, still trying to grasp the problem, and her package away and she didn't come back to get on the plane.

I don't know why I wrote that. I guess it was just a reaction to "suspicious activity" meaning a whole range of things. And the oddity that this woman, who looked innocent as could be, couldn't get her head around the notion that she's not supposed to leave packages unattended. One wonders where she's been these last couple of years.
