How are they going to secede with only 50,000 people?

Dunno. I suppose the 50K is just a seed population. I still think you'd need at least ten times that many to create a critical mass big enough to jump start such an endeavor. Given that they were being triggered by gay marriage, an immediate concern, they couldn't be planning to wait a few breeding generations to make their play for secession.

Perhaps it's just a publicity stunt to express the extent of their disapproval.

It's a fascinating phenomenon, though. Most people go along to get along to a practical extent. Some who want to live in our own little worlds do so right in the midst of the larger world by just doing our own thing while others around us do something entirely different. But others go even further needing an actual separation, not just a virtual one, not just tuning out but eliminating what they reject, what they can't control. Bring on the shrinks.

Pretty audacious plan. I'd love to see how such a thing might play out, what sort of society they would set up if they could. Imagine us all here posting about whether to endorse secession or not. Makes the problems we talk about now seem small.

It would make a great plot for a book or a movie.
