In the Vatican, the church is the state and the Pope is infallible and is the official spokesman for the supernatural Big Fella Himself, or Herself in the USA. I prefer "Themself" though there is purportedly only one and grammarians would be irritated. I suspect that if there is a Himself or Herself or Themself, they are likely to be more in the nature of lots of pixels making up the picture, rather than one big lump. A bit in the way that the USA, and other countries, are not really a single thing, but actually lots of individuals acting in orchestral form to make music in the nature of jazz, which in temporal terms is very cacophonous. In celestial form, the music would be splendiferous, in perfect harmony. When we hear perfect pitch, swelling harmony and celestial choirs, we'll know we are nearing Nirvana. At the moment, the world seems tone deaf. But I won't go down the theology road. There are enough wars already underway along there as the various proponents battle each other to the death over who's version of love, peace, harmony and thou shalt not kill is correct [not to mention who gets the money and the girls]. As you say, bossing other people around and stealing their property is the real problem. Also, as you say, excommunication is a powerful social control of those who are individual in spirit. <If forced to choose between fitting into your community or going it alone, most knuckle under. > If excommunication doesn't work, there are more vigorous enforcement measures which are usually taken.
