Of course they are separated the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and Iran, which itself has a culture quite removed from the Arab dominated Middle-East. Pakistan and Turkmenistan, which country extends much farther toward the mid-east than Afghanistan, are not considered Middle-Eastern and they are no more separated from the region than Afghanistan. The mention of Afghanistan in middle eastern studies departments does not occur because of any historical affiliation.
