Sarmad, to take your excellent post one step further, take a look at the leaders of the 9/11 attack-- middle class or affluent, Western-educated, and technically proficient. These are the people the West had been counting on to buy into our lifestyle. Instead, they flew planes into buildings, killing thousands.

Okay so I was unclear whether you were drafted or you volunteered. I am sure the draft and the Vietnam experience has permanently altered your perspective.

Our actions in Iran during the Cold War could have had more foresight possibly I dont know. But to say the Cold War had no battles is a mistake. There are many countries that suffered because of the USSR's agression. I think the biggest mistake we made in recent history is leaving Afghanistan to fester after we supported the activities against the USSR.

I agree that we need to permit self representation even if we do not agree. But reality is that we cannot let this get out of control in the Persian Gulf. Our deal with the devils in charge in SA has created a monster that is spreading across the Muslim world. Sure some prosperous people are brainwashed into killing themselves and us in attacks like 9 11. Do you think ignorant and poor personnel could have perpetrated those attacks. Not the poor victimized masses are the ones being lined up for slaughter in Iraq.

From my perspective, Iran under the Shah was a much better place than Iran under the Ayatollahs. Afghanistan under the Taliban is also not what I would call a good place.

Yes, it's true that Bin Laden wants us out of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, etc. I don't want to make Bin Laden happy. That's not one of my goals in life.

You may think it would be a good idea to let the Ayatollahs and the Talibans take over the Middle East, but I don't.

You can call it "propping up", but the alternative is not democracy, it's totalitarianism. Muslim theocracies are not superior to the status quo.

I knew a lot of Iranian students in the US who were anti-Shah. They moved here because they were persecuted in Iran. They're still here, for the most part, life in Iran isn't any better under the Ayatollahs. Some went back and were executed by the Islamic revolutionaries. Ironic, no?
