The question is which is which?!

The US is a republic which markets itself as a democracy, but isn't, and China calls itself the Democratic Republic of China and isn't a democracy either.

However, I know you are implying that the US is the democracy, but is it? Sure, the people vote -- but what choice do they really have? And then, once their representatives have been elected, do We the People have any influence on the decisions which those representatives make? In fact, I would say that the various lobbies, organizations and companies which contributed to the election campaigns of those who are elected have far more influence on their decisions than any hundred or even thousand Joe-SixPacks waving signs and making noise in the street.

> You know a lot more about how the U.S. really operates than most rosey-eyed Americans.

I am not unique. Americans don't realize how far their influence has spread in the world and how much people elsewhere really do know about America and the so-called American way of life. And, let's face it, people in the US are no different from people anywhere. In fact, the history of the US is very similar to the history of South Africa, for example. I understand when the emigrants left Europe, say 100 or 150 years ago, it was touch and go to which country they went. Actually my grandparents went to Australia first and my wife's grandfather went to the US before coming to SA.
