Elmatador,

This statement is true for the East Coast USA.

Visibility in many U.S. national parks has decreased to a small fraction of its natural range due to the large amounts of haze-causing pollution emitted by coal-burning power plants, cars and trucks, refineries and other industrial and urban sources.

The ozone levels (directly caused by pollution) are high in the Arcadia National park as described in the link. I know as I lived on the East Coast USA for several years. There is also a higher incidence of various pollution induced illnesses.

Some facts..

Nearly 5 million children (7%) in the United States suffer from asthma. The rate of prevalence increased by 74% and the number of children dying from asthma increased threefold between 1979 and 1996

Now scientists can argue to they are blue in the face about what is and isn't a real fact and whether various factors are related or not (such as asthma caused by increased pollution levels).

However, where the safety and health of the population is concerned, a precautionary approach should be used imho. We all have lives, have kids to look after, and we are not like scientists hired by tobacco companies to disprove any link between smoking and lung cancer.

In addition the mercury level in fish of 1 ppm is in the danger area as I see it. The origin of mercury is mainly fossil burning power stations.

So I have difficulty in understanding people who do not think there are pollution problems out there, or who think these problems should be best ignored.

It seems like lunacy to me.
