Mining Sector in Play: Lots of Takeover Candidates ( financialwire.net ) Jun 1, 2004 (financialwire.net via COMTEX) -- (FinancialWire) The mining sector appears to have been set into play with the offer by Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. (NYSE: CDE) to acquire Wheaton River Minerals Ltd. (TSX: WRM; AMEX:WHT) for $1.7 billion in stock and cash, and the $884 million all-shares bid by Golden Star Resources (AMEX: GSS; TSX: GSC) to buy Iamgold Corp. (AMEX: IAG; TSX: IMG). Only two months ago, Wheaton had agreed to merge with Iamgold, and a vote had been scheduled June 8 by shareholders of both companies. Yesterday the company's board rejected the Coeur d'Alene bid and reconfirmed its Iamgold merger. Analysts were quick to suggest that other large mining companies, such as Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM; TSX: NMC) and Barrick Gold (TSX: ABX) may be looking at candidate companies, to further fuel the consolidation. Jay Taylor, CEO of North America's third largest gold producer, Placer Dome Inc. (TSX: PDG), was quoted as saying his company is in fact looking at candidates.
