Hybrids will be the next big thing in autos. They have gotten a rather tentative reception. They have been available for 5 years now after all. It's the new 2004 Prius, new Ford Escape hybrid SUV, and high oil prices that are focusing the attention on hybrids lately. If oil prices remain high, look for hybrids to take off. The one drawback is that they don't get quite the gas milage that they're advertised to get. But, still a small/midsize car that gets 44 MPGs is rather impressive, and an SUV that gets 35 MPGs is very impressive. High oil prices and the need for auto makers to compete will probably make hybrids rather common, if not dominant, later this decade. Then comes the fuel cell car, and of course a few improvements in battery technology and suddenly electric cars might be back in the spot light. The traditional internal combustine engine is doomed, as is oil in the long run as an energy source.
