The Touch That Transforms

Matthew 28:19-20

No less than seven times in the book of Matthew, we see that people were healed of sickness and pain because Jesus touched them. He saw beyond their symptoms, past their illnesses, and through their scars. He saw the real need: the need for touch. And His healing touch transformed lives again and again.

This is one need that has not disappeared in the two thousand years since Jesus walked the earth. Today, we almost never see the word "touch" without some reference to scandal, impropriety, or immorality. How did this wonderful word get so maligned?

Ministry requires our hands. We are called by God to proclaim the saving news of Jesus Christ to the world. Why is it that we think this can be done only with our mouths? Rather, God has empowered every part of us for the task.

We touch lives not just by telling others about Jesus, but by showing genuine love and compassion to them in their need. Our hearts, mouths, and hands must be operating in perfect concert to accomplish the world-changing mission to which we have been called.

And, when we join together as a body of believers, we must touch lives through the power of prayer. Furthermore, the unified church presents a mighty tool of teaching, discipleship, and fellowship that calls in the lost and equips the saved.

Jesus touched lives. His followers—the church and you yourself—must do likewise. How might God touch a heart through you today?
