Obeying God: When We Say Yes

MATTHEW 16:13-17

When Peter said yes to the Savior's request to use his boat, the soon-to-be apostle's plans and life were irrevocably changed. Initially, fishing was put on hold; in the future, Peter would become a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Obedience to God never proves to be a disappointment. Jesus filled the empty nets with an enormous catch and made Peter into a "fisher of men." Our Lord will do this with our finances, relationships, or other areas of our lives that need transforming. He does it His way and with His purposes in mind. As Peter learned, we can trust God's purposes, even in periods of waiting or uncertainty.

Obeying God allows Him to demonstrate His power in our life. Peter witnessed the miracle catch of fish that started with a "yes" to Jesus' simple request. He could have looked at his to-do list and said, "Too busy." Or he could have said that he was a fisherman, not a taxi driver. Instead, he agreed and saw the power of God at work. As a disciple of Christ, he saw firsthand the Lord's transforming power in his own life.

Obedience always results in a deeper understanding of God and of ourselves. Having seen the miracle of the full nets, Peter gained fresh insight into who Jesus was and how he, Peter, was a sinful man. Eventually, he came to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.

What is God asking of you today? Listen carefully, say yes by following His directions, and watch what He accomplishes in and through you!

Do Fathers Really Matter?

1 Timothy 5:8

All around us is evidence that home life is spiraling downward. There are no doubt many reasons for this 40-year trend, but numerous households suffer as the result of an irresponsible father refusing to assume the godly position he's been given.

Scripture clearly teaches that God has singled out the man to be in charge of the family unit. (Genesis 3:16) The Lord loves both man and woman equally, but He gave to man the task of heading the family. Even when a father does not live up to expectations, he is still the leader because God does not change His mind.

A father's responsibility can be summarized in one word: provision. He is to see to the physical needs of his household. Even more importantly, he provides for emotional needs. Some dads cannot give their families luxury cars or fancy houses. But every dad can share his time and love, which works to build the self-esteem of his children. Any child would choose a daddy's love, understanding, and support in preference to a house.

Fathers are also spiritually accountable. It is primarily Dad's job to teach the children to read Scripture and pray. The man must choose for his household a church that proclaims biblical principles. The responsibility for spiritual growth cannot be delegated to even the most godly wife—God does not accept that excuse.

To aid with living a godly life, the Lord gives the Holy Spirit to every believer—this includes dads bearing the burden of their responsibility. Fathers, the Spirit of God will enable you to be a godly leader.
