SAN FRANCISCO--Digital camera shipments from Japanese suppliers were 4.7 million units in April, up 73 percent from the like period a year ago, according to RBC Capital Markets on Tuesday (June 1).

The figures come from Japan's Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). The CIPA tracks digital camera shipments by Japanese vendors, which account for an estimated 80 percent of the market.

"It appears our digital camera forecast of 39 percent y/y growth to 75 million units may be conservative," according to RBC of San Francisco. "With year-to-date volume tracking to 69 percent y/y growth, we believe 50-60 percent unit growth is more likely."

With >4 megapixel (MP) cameras now accounting for 50.3 percent of April shipments, RBC continues to expect 512-MB cards will be the sweet spot in the retail sector in 2004. The 5-MP cameras now account for 25 percent verses 11 percent in April 2003, according to the San Francisco-based investment banking firm.
