You forgot the tagline -- "BurmaShave."

Back in the good old days, mothers were considered special, too, especially those of us who gave birth without anesthesia.

These days, of course, "mother" is a dirty word.

I'll make a deal with you. Carry several sons for nine months each, give birth without anesthesia, nurse your children until they are weaned, and give up your gay social life and/or career to stay home with your children, and then we'll compare notes about who is the real hero/heroine.

You have never lived till you have almost died.
For those who've fought for it,
Life has a flavor,
The protected will never taste.

I don't think you can glorify war that way. For some the "flavor" isn't so good. How else do you explain the statistically swollen numbers of Vietnam vets that have committed suicide?

As for me, I don't regret having served in combat, but I wouldn't want anyone else to have to do it again. If there's wisdom to be gained in battle, and there is, I think there are other, maybe slower, ways to garner that wisdom.

It's just too bad that our current president apparently never gained enough of that wisdom to understand the horror and limitations of war, even after 55 years of life.
