I just received an Internet story celebrating the excesses of Gen. Pershing in Philippines.

It's an urban legend.. Although, IMO, a highly creative one that may have its merits at a very primal and brutal level.

I've always thought we should spread the rumour that we use rifle lubricants based upon pork fat.

As for the Phillipines, bear in mind that it was a civil war between the muslims living on the southern islands of Mindanao, and the predominantly Christian northern islands, inlcuding Luzon..

My opinion is that both sides bear considerable responsibility for the on-going bloodshed and intolerance.

Whenever anyone receives such rumors I'd recommend a quick verification on sites such as Snopes.

Claim: General John J. Pershing effectively discouraged Muslim terrorists in the Philippines by killing them and burying their bodies with pigs.

The bit about "letting one go" is an old one, and has been used in films and novels (Usual Suspects was a recent example...)
