Rock > The U.S. is one of the most religious countries on earth.

adherents.com

>>the United States has a greater number of religious groups than any other country in the world<<

% of U.S. pop. in attendance at worship during a given week = 31.5 (in 2001)

On the basis of religious attendance, nearly 1 in 3 Americans are seriously religious and the figure is probably a lot higher.

> in reality, the U.S. is one of the most fundamentalist and religous countries on earth

No doubt about that.

[T]he U.S. is one of the most fundementalist [sic] and religou [sic] countries on earth.

We may be a religious country, but I have yet to see polls comparing the U.S. to other countries.

But the U.S. as a fundamentalist country? What are you basing that assessment upon?

The US is the NEW TALIBAN WEST.....
they just can't see themselves in the mirror....where the TRUTH shows Bush to be the leader of a frightening Christian Crusade AGAINST THE MIDDLE EAST for oil AND power
with more and more people VOTING SOLELY ON THE RELIGIOUS basis of Bush being a Born again and talking with God every morning, the true state of the union is being completely distorted and torn from the VERY THING THE FOUNDING FATHERS DECRIED....
CHURCH and STATE TOGETHER....
and now the US is the world's Christian THEOCRACY GOVERNMENT and waging HOLY WAR without precident

Re: But, I think it's really a vehicle to achieve their wider goals, rather than a reason to achieve their wider goals, like control of ME oil supplies.

"Religion" as a Trojan cart/vehicle to further "wider goals"... Fine with me but then, you could say the same thing about ANY theocratic regime! Iranian ayatollahs too use Islam as a vehicle to advance other, mundane objectives... Hindu nationalists too use Hinduism to maintain Hindu hegemony and the caste system... European Catholics too use religion to deny Turkey EU membership, etc, etc. For that matter, Bush and his born-gain side-kicks' big mistake was to assume that the American far-right was soluble within the GOP --hence their attempt/strategy to reach out to the religious freaks... but the sad, ominous truth is that it panned out the other way --it's the GOP that proved soluble in far-right, religious bigotry! As author Chris Bull tells it in his forthcoming book:

Message 20177422

Then you shouldn't overlook the possibility for the religious masses themselves to instrumentalize their faith and turn it into a (reactionary) political agenda... Hence the manipulation of religion as a way to achieve "wider goals" is not just an "elite" trick to deceive the masses, it's also a way for crackers, holy rollers and other Bible Belt dwellers to rationalize their (political) frustrations.

Just take creationism for instance: superficially, it's merely the crackpot theory that BIOLOGICAL evolution is a liberal hoax --but it's a (geo-)political agenda as well! Indeed, creationism wouldn't be such a big deal if it were just a matter of what happened four billion years ago... Actually, creationism insinuates that not only biological evolution is a fallacy but SOCIAL and POLITICAL evolutions are too!! With far-reaching consequences for American politics at home and abroad. Somehow, creationists view today's world as the immutable, unchanging, unevolving creation of God. A creation that is the image, the worldly replica of its Creator... In this world, white, Christian people run the show --technologically, culturally, economically,... whereas yellow (Asian) people toil and sweat like "soulless clones" in their anthills of iniquity... Benighted Asia has still to be graced by the Christian revelation.... Then comes Africa and her hapless wretches dying from AIDS, famine, internecine warfare and whatnot... Now this is all depressing, granted, but this is also the world ACCORDING TO GOD! You wanna change it? improve it? You wanna help the poor blacks? Enlighten the yellow ants? It's a SIN! Just like it would have been a sin for Nature to rebel biologically (read: evolve) against its Creator, it's likewise a sin for mankind to politically defy the world order... Get the picture?
