I don't have access to more detail from Smith Barney, but it is my opinion that this is basically a cyclical call. The stocks they took favorable action on are those perceived to be less tied to the cycle (DPMI, WFR). BRKS will go into overdrive when new fabs are built--unless, of course, they are not.

Bruce, are you willing to post results of your test here?

Another thought: if these premature calls for the equipment cycle top keep stock price down, then when the top really occurs there is nowhere to go for the stock but down. The premature top calls have then effectively robbed us of gains.

What strikes me as very unusual is the fact that nearly all of the names with strong IP are cut, while MEMC (WFR) is raised. Look back in MEMC's history to see how much money they have made even during the good times. Their debt to equity is .935....compare that with any other name in the sector. If the sector is peaking, do you really want to own a stock with a less than stellar balance sheet? In this group, as with technology in general, strong IP is the way to go.....I simply cannot understand how an "expert" could not see this.

So much for the SOX leading us into a sustained rally...

That didn't take long.
