I have visited Pakistan on numerous occasions and am headed there, again, later this month...

I am glad to read of your first hand knowledge of the area. I have none, which is one of the reasons I have stayed around reading this thread even after the subject of discussion changed from the markets to 'politics'.
As regard to the personalities on the thread, I always just look for the ideas and substance in the posts.

I think you should try and arrange to meet with Ike on one of your trips...I have only talked to him on the phone (about a year ago), but he was most polite and enjoyable...even while I was telling him my opinion of the parallels between Bush and Truman; that he would be a one term president. And that like old Harry, Bush was not prepared with the international background necessary to handle the new world alignment that is taking place post 9-11.

There is one rule of thumb that I believe is true when it comes to almost any social subject. And that is the more and more facts (intelligence) you find out about a subject, the less and less one is inclined to take an extreme position on either side of the issue.

Thank you for the lesson on India. I was taught that the privacy of the voting booth was one of the fundamental requirements of democracy. Who tells the folks who can't read which set of symbols (letters) represent which candidate?? Is that person trustworthy? Who watches the interpreter?? (now we have 3 people in the voting booth??). To be honest, I know nothing of India's constitution, but I find it remarkable (in a positive way) that the voting process has survived and prospered...
