I was curious about the sound quality scale, and set about checking it a week ago. Different systems are used by telecom carriers historically, and for Internet PacketCable. The telecom system gives you talk about so many “9's” of reliable quality. For PacketCable, it’s something called the MOS Score (via PESQ). i.e., Voice Quality Net2Phone incorporates ITU Standard P.862 -- the Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality algorithm (PESQ) -- to measure voice quality in its network management suite of tools. The output of the PESQ algorithm is the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) rating that would be provided by a human. It is the most current and reliable predictor of voice quality for packet-based voice solutions. MOS Values 1 Bad 2 Poor 3 Fair 4 Good 5 Excellent I didn't take it further than that, because this sort of thing will be proved out, and we need to see repetitions of people saying they really liked or were disappointed in the service, as roll-outs happen. Ntop thought it was a good measure; and they showcase the quality assurance. You have to decide what 'excellent' represents -- is it obtainable using present standards. This is PacketCable, and not SIP, and so whatever the quality is with PacketCable, it is less with SIP, and people are generally be satisfied with their vonage service as individual subscribers, while Charter said they did not like vonage's quality. So there you go. It will have to be proved out for NTOP/PacketCable. Re the FBR presentation today, that “text” was pre-prepped before the live conference, and it was an excerpt of some more complete dialogue. The context tells you it was written out before NTOP announced the full Liberty Cablevision Puerto Rico rollout. I’ve yet to listen to the webcast of the FBR presentation; it is now archived, and being set up per FBR. My understanding from the couple of posts available is that NTOP is setting up a European operational office and that is significant in some way as to what it perceives about European business development; savyguru said he felt more confident about ntop that he has in some time (he has been skeptical, and like many can revert); new feature add-ons are being developed; and there was some context established about Mexico.
