The choices were stay in school, get married and have kids and keep your deferment. Volunteer for the draft and get it over. Wait to get drafted.

Or you could enlist. The Army was a 3 year enlistment and you got to pick either your MOS or what country you could spend one year in. Or you could enlist in the Air Force or Navy.

Kerry's deferment had run out and they wouldn't grant him an extension so he enlisted in the Navy.
