We simply don't know how much it would have taken to invade Japan because we didn't do it.

That's BS CF.. BS.. We didn't know PRIOR to the invasion because our intelligence was obviously flawed. But AFTERWARD, we had access to Japanese battle plans for thwarting any US invasion. That made it much easier to "gameplay" what would have occurred had the US actually been required to invade the Japanese home islands.
