Crouching Reporter, Hidden Camera
The more coverage I see of Iraq and hostilities, the more I see small groups of insurgents posing for cameras and reveling in their 15 minutes of fame. This is not uniqu to Iraq tough. I can think back to years of Israel/Palestinian imagery, where people on both sides modify their behavior to please the camera.

Which brings to mind a question. With all the technological advances in digital photography and film, why can't reporters & Cameramen be less visible to those they are filming? I still see huge TV cameras being lugged around on cameraman shoulders. He may as well say, "Lights, camera, action!"

Bottom line, people everywhere are addicted to the camera. Reality TV shows in America at least translate into entertainment. But in war zones, the camera attracts similar attention-mongers, but with a far different result. Instead of entertainment, we see horror, bloodshed and the promotion of violence.

The media should embrace new technologies and attempt to put the one-time beacon of broadcast - the bulky camera - on the back burner, and endeavor to tilt more toward objectivity by remaining as invisible as possible.

This can present problems, like record in sound and conducting interviews, but I think at a minimum, we need reality, not staged reality. Just as every reality TV show is full of wanna-be actors who know they are being filmed, so is the reality of war being performed by those who long for the lens.
