Considering the nature of both new entrants, anyone now playing or planning to play in FTTP had best sit up and take notice. The first new entrant is none other than Lucent [LU], fielding new technology in development for years at Bell Labs. Only this time Lucent isn't Lucent. The company's surprisingly turned over its products to a little outfit called Amedia [AANI] that lost a fortune trying to market a compact-disc music protection technology. Still, the products will have the Lucent trademark on them, and Lucent may wind up selling them itself. The second new player is Centillium [CTLM], one of the major semiconductor vendors in the ADSL market. Centillium's aiming to duplicate its success in ADSL in the fiber market, muscling in on a niche so far served only by smaller startups. Fiber Optics Forecast spoke to senior executives at both companies to get the inside scoop on why they think their technologies might dominate FTTP and to find out how they plan to assault the market with their forthcoming products.
