Pacific Cycle Embraces Wal-Mart RFID Mandate by Installing SAMSys Readers to Benefit Internal Operations
Pacific Cycle using SAMSys MP9320 UHF Portal Readers to Log Inventory in
Illinois Warehouse

TORONTO, June 10 /CNW/ - SAMSys Technologies Inc. (SMY: TSX), an
international provider of radio frequency identification (RFID) hardware
solutions and consulting services, announced that Pacific Cycle, the largest
bicycle supplier in the U.S. and a leader in the design, marketing and
distribution of high quality branded bicycles and other recreational products,
has installed SAMSys MP9320 UHF portal readers as part of a RFID pilot program
designed to create greater efficiency internally as well as to comply with the
supplier mandate from Wal-Mart that requires RFID case and pallet tagging
compliance by 2005.
Through the installation of SAMSys portal readers, Pacific Cycle is in a
unique position to take advantage of Wal-Mart's pallet and case level mandate.
Because bicycles and other recreational products from Pacific Cycle only fit
one item to each case, its case-level tagging is also item-level tagging. As a
result, Pacific Cycle can also use RFID readers to track its products through
Wal-Mart's retail stores to eliminate out-of-stock situations and navigate
store associates to products that aren't on store shelves as well as monitor
products within its own warehouses.
"Our goal is to meet the mandate set by Wal-Mart and to also benefit from
using this internally," said Edwin Matthews, IS director with Pacific Cycle.
"By tracking items within the retail store and determining what factors impact
sales, we hope to learn how to increase sales at retail stores. We're also
hoping to reduce manpower in our receiving and shipping operations as well as
manage events to make sure we're shipping the right product."
Pacific Cycle has installed SAMSys MP9320 UHF portal readers in the
company's warehouse in Olney, Ill. As workers pass through the warehouse's
dock doors with product, the SAMSys RFID reader system logs the inventory.
SAMSys has also integrated a stack light, giving forklift drivers a visual
indication that the pallet tag has been read as trucks are being loaded or
unloaded.
"Pacific Cycle is a prime example of how companies can now see how to
build a good return on investment from the RFID tagging mandates by finding
ways to use the technology to create efficiencies in their own operations,"
said Tres Wiley, SAMSys President. "We are pleased that SAMSys has been able
to help Pacific Cycle begin validating those benefits and also become a leader
in compliance for Wal-Mart's program."
Pacific Cycle has a host of ideas for RFID that the company believes
could lower warehouse costs, provide more accurate inventory management and
increase sales in retail stores. The company desires to tag products at all of
its off-shore manufacturing sites, giving Pacific Cycle the ability to
automatically receive products as they move into the warehouse.
