LONDON (Dow Jones)--German manufacturing orders surged in April on strong foreign demand and some unexpected domestic interest, preliminary data from the Economics Ministry showed Friday.

The volume of manufacturing orders increased a seasonally adjusted 2.5% on the month in April, beating forecasts of a 0.9% rise. In March, orders slipped 0.3% on the month.

In addition, big-ticket orders were below average in April, a spokesman at the ministry said.

Foreign orders, which are affected by the euro's exchange rate, jumped a seasonally adjusted 3.8% on the month in April, after slipping 0.7% in March.

Domestic orders, which have been sluggish, were up 1.2% on the month, after rising 0.1% in March, the data showed.
