Murali,

Did the United States provide Saddam aid in his war against the Ayatollah's Revolutionary Iran? Sure. The United States also provided aid to the Soviet Union, BEFORE the United States went to war against Germany.

Did the United States know that Stalin was probably a very bad man? Sure. But America made the decision that Stalin wasn't quite as bad as Hitler.

I think the United States also provided some aid to Mao; in his struggle with our then, former and future friend, Japan. Once again, the judgement probably was that Mao was better than Imperial Japan.

Did the United States know that Saddam was a very bad man? Sure. But once again, the United States made the decision that Saddam wasn't quite as bad as Khoemeni.
