ever see the movie "Dave"?

Kevin Kline, ordinary Joe Citizen looks like a twin the then President and is clandestinely drafted to stand-in for him when he suffers a stroke - "the carefree humanitarian gladly answers his call to duty.....he takes the extraordinary opportunity to implement progressive programs, reduce the national deficit and significantly effect social change"

in one scene he calls in his accountant buddy to make cuts in the budget to fit in an axed reading program for kids - next scene is a department head meeting where he asks all departments to agree to some cut of an "exhorbitant" cost in their area

after the shock, they all get into it and he x's off one flagrant cost after another on his list till he has enough for his reading program

they all end up leaving the meeting, happy, chatting, slapping each other on the back, knowing they did the right thing - no one took the entire brunt of cost cutting, lots of fat was trimmed off to make room for a good program - they all had contributed - very 'feel good'

ever think that would happen in real life politics?

they would leave that meeting bloodied and bruised, fighting to keep every cent they had in their budgets

[aside] speaking of Kevin Kline, his "Life as A House" is one of my favorite movies
