IMO, that historically gets euphemized by the party in
power into a threat to national security &/or national
interests. And one reason neither side will publicly admit
to it, is that it would be asking for a withering
firestorm from the opposition.

It's a message the Administration has unfortunately failed to properly articulate. Perhaps it's a bit too imperial a view to state out in the open too often.

Even when it is articulated, it goes right over their head. The AF Academy speech, for instance. The distortion of that speech in various venues has been so beyond the pale that I've simply walked away. Not even worth it trying. It isn't about the ideas. It's about Bush. Period. They would disagree if he said the Sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
