Mike, I think sometimes it's too easy to confuse "idealism" with "rightness." I know that conservative like to rail against moral "relativism," but I think they're wrong. One of the greatest moral truths is, in my opinion, the morality that allows another to choose his own path through life as long as it doesn't involve running over another. I think this is true even if that path is one you would never choose for him.

Aside from philosophical discussions on morality, however, I think you mean that you understand the limitations on the use of our military power and the inherent "undoability" of some missions through the use of that power, whether our motives are grounded in idealism or not.

Pragmatism is the speed limit of change, and sometimes its stop sign. We all want to be NBA stars but our lofty goals usually die when we turn 16 and realize we're earthbound. That's when we start thinking about making a living in the real world. I think that's about the level of development the Bush Administration is at now but unfortunately they can't get rid of those pimples, they never took the necessary math classes and they don't have the grades to get into a good college. Hopefully they won't end up in jail.

The problem for us was that many of us fell for the dream and that dream was so inspiring that we failed to listen to the realists that told us we were heading for a cliff. Hello cliff, goodbye dream. I'm just hoping the dream turns out to be no nightmare. I'll buy a pair of those RCGs for a fair price.

I'm ready for what the Bush supporters said they wanted when Bush got elected; adults in charge. I hope that Kerry can put together a good team that's well versed in diplomacy and that can move beyond this era of non-intellectualism and non-understanding of the real world.
