I'm a really big fan of energy conservation and clean alternative energy, so I like the idea of shifting away from Bush's oil-centric view of the world.

We're going to kick the imported 60-70% of our petroleum habit in 10 years, while not developing the most promising potential reserves at home?!?

He said that we would be independent of Mideast oil in 10 years, not all imports. As best I recall, right now we only get about 30% of our oil from the Mideast. Quite a bit comes from Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela.

I think we can make a considerable dent in our petroleum consumption by adopting hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) technology over the next ten years. This technology is really going to boom, just like the Internet did after Al Gore "invented" it. <g>

However, there is a huge contradiction in what Kerry said. We need crude oil prices to stay HIGH, to drive the market shifts that decrease dependence on petroleum. Talking down the price of oil now will prolong the addiction, resulting in even worse withdrawal symptoms later.
