Well... true, but as they say in Spanish, you get out of Guatemala to get in Guatepeor -gg This is a play on words and their meaning, i.e. the second part of the country's name 'mala' (bad) to a 'made up word using the ending 'peor' (worse) translation: you get out of a bad situation only to get into a worse one... as there are different type of evils --big time polution and unimaginable corruption, just to mention a couple of them, amongst others... a better selection of destination may yield substantially better results... The reason I say so is because Guadalajara (formerly a beautiful and clean city is now the younger brother of Mexico City... (A true monstrosity of unparallel proportions)... it is the largest parking lot in the world and so Guadalajara is 'on track' to become the second... Then again, I am not the best person to express these opinions since to me there are places in the US that I would consider 'third world' -ggg But you are right I see the trend and these pockets of first world communities amidst third world chaos are multiplying all over Latin America... Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua are becoming (if not already) prime locations for real estate development at relatively lower prices. Another aspect is medical costs... again, being careful and doing some research can yield big rewards, by this I mean that in certain places medical care is considerable less expensive, and eliminating big time specialists or special attention medical centers, there are fair to good doctors throughout Latin America, without the ridiculous price tags... This brings me to say that I believe that 'beach-front' real estate in Latin America could prove to be the next best opportunity in real estate... It is not risk free, but the cost of the waterfront dirt may entice (and some have done so already) many developers and investors. While the only gasoline available in Mexico is Pemex, Guadalajara features Exxon/Mobil, Shell, Chevron and BP. Well... as far as I know, those stores sell additives and other minor stuff... PEMEX is like... THE sacred cow where the government mafia gives employment to all sorts of relatives... has proven untouchable when it comes to reforms... two years ago they tried to open up the oil (gasoline) retail market, and they protested as if they were selling off the country -personally, I would do it in a nanosecond... then again, there is a reason why nature is wise and do not give wings to scorpions ...-gg No kidding... The oil production of Pemex is 24 bbl/employee... EXON = 48 bbl/employee. Petrobras (Petro-Brasil) 44bl/empl...invertia.com So the only way they can get away with that is by having the most corrupt monopoly on earth... still... PEMEX (i believe) is the only oil company in the world that LOSES money... anyway that’s a different subject.... FYI... Pemex was born out of the sarcasm [more like stupid greed] of foreign (to Mexico) oil companies... in 1938 Presidente Cardenas offered to the consortiums that if they paid $26 Million pesos to the unions HE would guarantee that the general strike would be terminated... It is reported that one of the officers quipped sarcastically... YOU ? He got up, said, gentlemen, this meeting is over and left... a few days later, he declared the nationalization of ALL oil companies assets and created Pemex, the largest nepotist employment company in the world [with oil as a side business -gggg]imp.mx As for food... All the names you mentioned are fast-food knock-offs... Which... any corner taqueria can beat them hands down and cooking with their eyes closed... As for fine dining... there are superb restaurants in most large cities and towns... both continental, and Mexican food... it is unfortunate that the real Mexican food is little known here (in large scale) it boggles my mind that restaurants that serve such inedible crap that is advertised as "Mexican Food" actually make as businesses... anywhere in Latin America such restaurants would be flops... but hey.... it is a free country and one is free to eat crap as much as people want... -gIf I were a retired worker from Mexico that's where I'd retire. Anyone who'd stay in Southern California on a limited budget deserves their hellish existence. Indeed... excellent point and again, it reinforces that there may be some god opportunities for the right development that could reproduce, (within the logical parameters) a 'first world' environment in paradise... I personally would do it in beach front properties or near them... many are ar more interesting, with lots of character and.... access to great outdoors... My personal favorite is anywhere in the Baja California peninsula.... (With the added advantage that development is relatively limited, i.e. not large masses of populations involved in the equation) due to the restricted availability of potable water, and an official policy to limit development... Having said that... the entire Mexican West Coast could be (on a selective basis) a small oasis with beautiful surroundings.... There are other locales that sound interesting too... one of them is Ecuador... (Which by the way, they eliminated their own currency (Sucre) and now the US dollar is THEIR currency...
