Bush is afraid of losing the catholic vote. Appearing with the Pope was to keep conservative catholics from bolting to Kerry. You're not very aware of this stuff, are you?

Kerry has already lost the Catholic vote. It's the largest swing vote in the electorate and they are very patriotic, so Bush gets the Catholic vote.
Besides, Kerry's support for abortion rights, loses those church members who place that issue above politics.
