Rock > I mean, to set Saddam Huessein up to invade Kuwait, and then eject him from that country just to gain a firmer grip on the oil supplies is a pretty amoral thing to do. In their eyes it's justified (perhaps even morally) by the need to ensure an adquate supply of oil for the American economy...

So why do they need such a lot of people? IMO, the US could have decided to do it and could have carried out the job without co-operation or agreement with anyone. In fact, I would say that that's exactly what happened. Indeed, other than the UK, Spain and Australia, the rest of the world were opposed to the ouster of Saddam. There was certainly no consensus at the UN, in fact, the Security Council was opposed to it.

> So be it, morality is often in the eyes of the beholder. The only thing that really counts in this world is wealth and power.

No discussion of morality here. One can visit the Pope for that. I would say Bilderberg is just a party for special people to meet each other. A club, in other words. And they certainly don't intend to spread their wealth around!

> They're probably discussing the thawing of relations between the Koreas, the prospects of China attacking Taiwan, how best to approach the new Quadafi in Lybia, the state of affairs in Iraq and how best to settle it and secure the oil, world trade, Al Queda, perhaps more mundane issue like social benefits in various countries and how to keep them in check. I imagine there are different conferences going on at the meeting as well.

Sure, that's what I see. There's nothing special about that. In fact, it doesn't even need to be so secret? If one nation needs to make a deal with another they don't do it at a party!

So as far as I can make out, although world leaders and leaders in various fields are certainly there, I do not believe they are there to plan some nefarious deed. And, indeed, if they are a de facto government, simply because of their representivity, then they are. The whole is the sum of the parts. Not greater, not less.

Actually, I think it's a good thing that top people from the leading countries and various fields have a venue to meet and talk to one another. If world leaders kept to themselves and didn't communicate I think it would be a lot worse. My gripe is I don't like some of the people who were invited but that doesn't mean all are tainted.
