I was 14, living in a GM town and things were bad. Everyone was out of work....it felt like a depression. There was no pride in our country and then came Grandpa America

I loved the man and voted for him my first year of college

I served in his Navy. Quite a change from the very moment he was sworn in. In just moments we were convinced that we mattered and that if we needed something we were going to get it. The cold war was very real. We had many things going on that made life a little dangerous in the North Atlantic. But he won it.

I remember well the day he was shot. Laying around the house when I saw a news break in saying he had been shot. Within minutes my phone rang and the duty officer on the boat said return to the boat immediately and get ready to get underway. They didn't know if it was some kind of plot or what. Of course we find out later it was just a love sick moron but we didn't know that at the time. We also didn't find out until years later how close we came to losing him that day.

What a great man.

<<i'm grateful he has shed the shackles of the burden of a body's and mind's ultimate "betrayal">>

I am too. But the selfish side of me is bummed that I was never able to meet and thank a man I had so much respect for
