Instead, there is an unspoken assumption that democracy is necessarily peaceful, or should be peaceful - there's a normative component - but it's ultimately never been peaceful in the face of anti-democracy.

This is something I've noticed too. The bizarre notion that the strenuous defense of our interests is a recent Bush/neocon disease. Never heard of the Monroe Doctrine, the Truman Doctrine, "making the world safe for democracy", "bear any burden, pay any price", etc etc. It's as if a whole segment of the population has bought into some historical fiction.

Can an intellectual operating there, where tyranny is the normal environment, actually come out and say the US way of life is the Gold Standard for people living in the Middle East?'

How can we expect them to when our intellectuals, operating here, won't say it?
