"The internet ... can lead to profound pessimism." Also to profound and mistaken optimism. You can avoid these by constantly asking "where is the proof? What is the evidence?" My pessimism is based on what I see is the sad fact that much of the American public can be fooled all of the time. Technology may be popular; the scientific method isn't, alas.
