I give him credit for not scaring the snot out of the kids. Did YOU jump up and scream "terrorists" when the first plane hit? Did you know it was a jetliner? You probably guessed, but had no facts at that moment. Most of the newscasters, and you can read the quoters here on SI too, thought it was a private plane. Thank goodness he didn't hit the panic button and nuke everybody in sight. Besides, military jets ARE scrambled immediately when an incident like this happens, without even presidential approval. The president gets involved when they are close enough to shoot. The fighters never had that chance.

While I don't agree with everything Bush does, it would be hard pressed to live in his shoes for that day. I wouldn't wish on anyone the decisions that faced him, or Clinton, or Gore, or Reagan, or Ford, or anyone else if they were in office at that time.

For me, it's not those 30 minutes that would bother me. It would be all the mistakes, anger and deception that passed on for years before that would upset me more. This was a long time in the making, long before Bush got into office.
