Generally speaking, people in beijing are quite content. Those older XiaGang workers who have had 30+ years of working age now can all enjoy LaoBao, about 1,400 Yuan/month, and they also enjoy free health insurance (although they still have to pay 20%). So these bunch are ok. Most of those 30 something got laid off are usually have unemployment insurance. So they are ok too. The major people are the poor farmers, and migrant workers. A new survey shows that most of migrant workers' children are mal-nutritioned, and too thin and short for their age, a proof for their hard life. Although the central gov. has put these on their agenda, so hopefully, the situation will improve.

Beijing has close to 10 "whole sale" centers, each has 4-6 stores high, and a couple of thousands of small shops, selling all kinds of goods from art to clothing to shoes to electronics. And the price is dirt cheap comparing with the US price. And if you are good at bargaining, then you can get much better deal. And a lot of them also have a good quality.
