I didn't know that. I assumed that someone needed to pay in before he or his dependents became eligible for payments. Are you telling me that if some gang banger who never had a job in his life gets killed, his kids get survivor benefits? Boy, is that a deal!

You just have to qualify, usually by being disabled.

Not exactly. If you qualify by becoming disabled and are not yet 62, you also have to pass a means test.

If your unearned and/or earned income is above a certain level, you still will not get ss.

The disqualifying income level is pretty low...I believe around 20k.
