Nobody thinks Reagan was a simpleton. People running against him may have implied that, including Bush Sr. who called Reaganomics "Voodoo economics" and warned against letting Reagan have access to the nuclear button. It wasn't just liberals.

Actually a lot of people were frightened by Reagan early on and for good reason. But he proved he wasn't a mad man and managed to charm almost everyone. That charm was his real weapon. He got people to like him and never had a cruel word to say about democrats. Bush is just the opposite. He had the whole world eating out of his hand after 9-11 yet managed to blow almost all the goodwill within a year so now he is the most disliked and distrusted presdient we have ever had. I wouldn't trust anything Bush says or does anymore. I believe he only obeys orders from Karl Rove telsl and that Rove is a professional liar.
