Even one is tragic, and a crime. But the number is not 3000, and definitely not over 3000. I had it wrong too. However, if you add approx 500 people killed at the Pentagon, then it is certainly over 3000. But those are not civilians.

Report: Final WTC death toll drops by three; could stand at 2,749
NEW YORK (AP) — Three names have been removed from the list of those killed in the World Trade Center attack, bringing the death toll to 2,749, which could stand as the final count, the medical examiner's office said Friday.
The official list of those missing for the first time now matches the number of death certificates the city has issued for attack victims, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the medical examiner.

"We believe this is the final number," she said.
